Most pet owners know there are definitely bad foods for dogs that they need to be aware of; this list probably includes chocolate, antifreeze, and toilet bowl cleaner.  However, there are some household items that can be harmful (even fatal) to you pets that you might not realize… and are abundant in your home.  Read the list below so you can take necessary precautions to keep your pets safe.

1)    Yeast Dough/Unbaked Bread
Chances are that your pup begs for freshly baked items, but you should restrict yourself from giving him any.  Any baked item containing yeast can be potentially deadly to dogs, as it can expand in his digestive tract and cause a fatal blockage.  Not something you want to deal with!

2)    Alcohol
This includes alcohol-based products.  It seems funny at first to think of a drunken dog, but alcohol can cause your pet to experience serious intoxication which can lead to death.  The smaller the dog, the higher the risk, so keep alcohol in a safe place that cannot be reached by your dog!

3)    Macadamia Nuts
Not even a small amount of macadamia nuts is safe for dogs; in terms of bad food for dogs, this is right up there as one of the worst! In fact, as few as six nuts can cause him to develop a dangerous reaction that will cause him to experience depression, inability to walk, paralysis of hind quarters, elevated heart rate and muscle tremors.

4)    Xylitol
Xylitol is an articifical sweetener found in gum, candy, bakery items, toothpaste and diet foods.  If your dog consumes too much of the product, he could experience a drastic blood sugar drop and liver failure.

5)    Flower and Plants
Not all flowers and plants are dangerous for your pup to ingest, but there is a list of them that can cause pet poisoning.  This includes lilies, aloe, ferns and oleander.  Ask your veterinarian for a complete list of toxic plants and be aware of the plants you have in your home and yard.

6)    Fat Trimmings and Bones
Dogs LOVE these items and it might seem natural to give them to him, but these are dangerous foods for dogs.  Fat trimmings can cause pancreatitis in dogs, and bone, even small pieces, can obstruct the digestive system and cause lacerations.

Hopefully it will be easy for you to help your dog avoid ingestion of these bad foods for dogs.  If you find that he has gotten into one of them, take him to the veterinarian immediately.  The sooner you get him treatment, the better the outcome will be!
