All across the United States animal shelters work hard every day to battle the effects of reckless pet ownership and the overpopulation of cats and dogs. According to the ASPCA approximately 8-12 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide each year. These animals come into shelters having been lost, abandoned, mistreated or just simply forgotten. It's a staggering statistic to learn that less than 2% of cats and only 15-20% of dogs that enter a shelter make it home to their rightful family.

The health status of each animal that comes into a shelter varies. If an animal has been homeless for quite some time, given birth in the wild, been injured by another animal, abused by a human, or spent a significant amount of time in harsh weather, they will most likely be stressed, malnourished and/or ill. When you consider the amount of companion animals that enter a shelter, and the health issues they can have, you can better understand what a massive undertaking it is to care for all of them effectively. Amazing people all over the nation volunteer their time, money and skills to help support animal shelters, not to mention the thousands of people who choose to make a sheltered animal part of their family.
