Essential Oils for Acne
Often a major problem with teens, acne affects everyone at least once in life. The skin care industry releases new products daily that claim to be the cure, but they often just provide more skin irritation without desired results. Essential oils provide a soothing, natural and affordable alternative. No acne treatment is a sure thing, but essential oils might just be the best remedy for you.
Which essential oils treat acne?
PSC favorite oils to control acne include lavender, tea tree and geranium. Other oils include sandalwood, jasmine, lemon, patchouli, chamomile, rosewood, and eucalyptus. These oils are useful for most skin types; however, individual skin types react differently to topical solutions. Read on to learn more about our favorite essential oils for acne.
Lavender oil calms nerves and soothes damaged skin. It may also help with the skin damage resulting from acne, as it can accelerate the healing of scars. Lavender is also a masterful stress reliever, which is one of the main culprits of acne.
Tea Tree oil is an excellent antibacterial, good for fighting acne and as a multi-purpose wound cleaner. It quiets irritations and rashes. The healing properties of this oil make it one of the finest essential oils to have in your medicine cabinet. As an acne treatment, tea tree oil acts fast and helps to clear up and soothe the affected area.
Jojoba oil is known as a carrier oil and is used to blend other essential oils with when you choose to apply them directly to the skin. Pure jojoba oil can be massaged straight onto the skin and helps to unclog the pores and eliminate dirt.
These oils can work together to help relieve the symptoms of acne.
Try the following recipes:
1) Mix 10 drops tea tree oil and 10 drops lavender oil with an ounce of jojoba oil. Apply to skin in place of a moisturizer.
2) Mix 3 drops of tea tree oil with 10 drops of jojoba oil. Grab a Q-Tip and dab the affected areas a few times a day.
3) Add 3-4 drops of lavender oil to a warm or cold compress and apply to affected area.
Keep in mind that, while hormonal disparities seem to be the main culprit in acne, stress, diet and toxin buildup are also contributors to breakouts. Eating a healthy diet and minimizing stress will play a major role in relieving the symptoms of acne.
Diluting essential oils: Mix 20 drops of any of top 3 essential oils with 40 ml of jojoba oil (the carrier oil). Shield this solution from the effects of light by storing it in an amber colored or opaque bottle. Shake the bottle well. Dab on the acne affected area with a cotton swab. Do not rub the solution in, and avoid application near the eyes and lips.
Allergy test: Take the oil mix and dab it a bit on your abdomen. Wait for few hours to see if you are allergic to it. If you have an allergic reaction or feel a burning sensation, apply more carrier oil to that area to reduce the effect of the essential oil. If you don’t experience side effects, your oil mix is safe for use.
