Do you experience frequent headaches?  With today’s busy lifestyles, the onset of a headache can begin when you least expect it.  You’ve probably tried pain medications, chiropractic care, avoiding certain foods, etc…but have you ever tried essential oils?  Essential oils can help relieve minor headaches, improve your mood, and may play a role in reducing the need to take pain medication.  A popular therapeutic essential oil blend for headaches consists of peppermint and lavender oil mixed together, or the use of each separately. Peppermint Oil works as an analgesic (also known as a pain killer) as well as a stimulant, both of which will aid in the relief of headache symptoms. Headaches are often caused by sinus pressure and peppermint oil is adept at breaking up congestion in the sinuses. Because peppermint oil is an energizing oil it is the perfect oil to use for headache relief during the day.

Lavender Oil can help to decrease the occurrence and severity of headache symptoms. Lavender oil is probably the safest essential oil to use as it is very mild; it can even be used on children. Headaches are frequently triggered by tension and stress making lavender oil the perfect oil to use as it is a masterful relaxant. Lavender oil is the perfect oil to use at night as well to aid in falling asleep and sleeping peacefully.

Grapeseed Oil is what is known as a carrier oil in the realm of aromatherapy; it is what you will blend the essential oils with when you want to apply them directly to the skin. Grapeseed oil is perfect as a carrier oil; it is light, odorless and won’t clog pores.

These oils can be used together as a massage oil, inhaled or used in a bath.  Here are some possible recipes to for using htese essential oils for headaches:

-Mix 5 drops of lavender and 1 drop of peppermint into 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil such as grapeseed oil. Massage neck, shoulders, forehead and/or temples.

-Add 3 drops of lavender or 3 drops of peppermint to a cotton ball, handkerchief or piece of cloth and inhale the essence deeply from the cloth every few minutes until the headache has subsided.

-Add 3 drops of lavender or 3 drops of peppermint to a hot or cold compress and lay over the forehead or eye area. Lay down and relax.

-Add 5-8 drops of lavender, peppermint or a mixture of both oils to a warm bath. Soak the headache away.

The above recipes can be used for quick relief while sitting at your desk, such as the recipe for adding the oils to a cotton ball, or taken longer to utilize and feel the full effects of at home in the evening, such as using them in a bath.

Important instructions:

Allergy test: Take the oil mix and dab it a bit on your abdomen. Wait for few hours to see if you are allergic to it. In case, you find that you are allergic to it or feel that it is burning your skin then apply more carrier oil to that area to reduce the effect of the essential oil. However, if you don't find any side effect then that oil mix is safe for use.

Diluting essential oils: Essential oils are highly concentrated and most of the time require a carrier oil when being applied directly to the skin. A carrier oil isn’t needed for applications that are inhaled, such as when adding a few drops of lavender to a cloth and inhaling deeply to encourage relaxation.
