Many times, people say that eating healthy is expensive; therefore they refrain from it and stick to buying junk food.  In reality, some of the cheapest foods are in fact the healthiest, including eggs!  Eggs are a superfood packed with protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals that provide several benefits to your health.

First of all, eggs affect your ability to concentrate and learn.  Whether you’re a student or have a full-time job, including eggs in your breakfast can improve your energy and brain power.  Children who eat eggs before going to school often have better concentration levels, math and reading skills, attendance, behavior and test scores. 

Egg yolks contain antioxidants called lutein and zeaxanthin that are believed to improve eyesight and decrease one’s risk for macular degeneration and cataracts.  Just another reason to pack an egg sandwich for lunch!

Because of the high protein level in eggs, they have the ability to keep you full for a longer period of time.  This can have a positive effect on weight loss or management because you won’t be tempted to snack or overeat throughout the day. Also, eggs are a complete protein, meaning that they contain all the essential amino acids the human body needs which help to control the rate that the body absorbs calories. 

Eggs can play a role in strengthening bones because they contain vitamin D.  You also get vitamin B12, riboflavin, folate and pantothenic acid from them.  All of these vitamins have their own beneficial functions and need to be included in your diet to stay healthy.

Pregnant women should keep eggs in their diet because they contain choline, an essential nutrient that assists with fetal development and preventing birth defects.  They also contain folic acid which helps prevent birth defects as well. 

Eggs can also help to prevent blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes.  This is because of selenium, an antioxidant found in eggs.  Don’t let the cholesterol in eggs scare you away, because there are plenty of ways to receive their nutrients without being negatively affected by the cholesterol.  First of all, cholesterol is found in egg yolk.  If you choose to eat egg yolk on a certain day, try to limit other cholesterol rich foods throughout the day to keep your levels down.  You can also try to avoid egg yolk and stick to egg whites, which contain no cholesterol.  There are also cholesterol-free egg substitutes that you can use.

Sulfur and protein are substances in eggs that keep hair and skin healthy.  There have also been studies that show that eggs can help in the prevention of cancer, especially breast cancer, because of their antioxidants. 

Egg protein is easy for your body to absorb, therefore it is one of the best foods you can eat to repair your muscles after a workout. 

Now that you know all the benefits eggs can provide your body with, hopefully you’ll realize that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages by far.  And even if you’re affected by high cholesterol, there are still ways to work around the high cholesterol content of eggs.
