Epakitin is recommended for dogs and cats suffering from impaired renal function. It should be given at the first signs of hyper-phosphatemia in cases of chronic kidney disease. One of the first observable symptoms is a low calcium level, which can cause lack of appetite leading to weight loss, fever, vomiting, stiffness, muscle twitching, panting, and face rubbing against objects. Unfortunately, there is no cure, but it is possible to increase both the quality of life and life-expectancy by adding a phosphate binder to the animal's diet.

Absorbed phosphorus can lead to further kidney damage and stimulate hyperparathyroidism. Chitosan is Epakitin's active ingredient. It is a natural polysaccharide that operates in the intestines to naturally bind phosphorus, derived from shrimp and crab shells. Dietary trials indicate that the addition of an intestinal phosphate binder lowers parathyroid hormone and serum phosphorous levels in cats with impaired renal function and also shows longer-term effectiveness, observable at six and nine month intervals.

Many current phosphate binders contain aluminum, which has been shown to be toxic to the kidneys. Epakitin is an aluminum-free option, showing in clinical trials at the University of Georgia and the University of Vienna to be effective in reducing urea, helping to control calcium absorption, and decreasing phosphatemia.

Epakitin should be fed along with a low phosphorous diet for the best results, and because it is highly palatable to both cats and dogs, it can help with the transition to new food for picky eaters. The formula, however, can also be used with animals regular food in instances where they refuse to change their diet.

Epakitin can be administered life-long, and is easy to feed, twice a day with meals, using the included scoop. The dosage is one scoop for every ten pounds (5 kg) of body weight. Each measuring spoon delivers one gram of Epakitin. Fresh water should always be available for animals on this supplement.

  5. I found you through this product review by Mary

I have a cat with only one kidney due to the other crushed by a huge tumor attached to the stomach. The surgery was two years ago and one would not believe he has but one kidney. One of my other cats has suffered with severe urinary tract problems to the point the vet wanted to reroute him. No further problems since he has been on Epakitin. Highly recommended! 6. This product brought me to you review by Tammie

I have an elderly dog that is on this and another medication. It was getting so expensive monthly to pay for her medicine, I was debating putting her to sleep because my husband is fixing to retire, and our income will be cut by 2/3. I thought I'd take one last chance and google to see if I could find this med somewhere other than the local vet. Thank goodness I found you. Not only did you save me over 1/2 the price I was paying, but you saved the life of a loving member of the family. Thanks!!!! (Posted on 11/18/11)

  7. senior cats review by GJR

My mother-in-law's old cat has failing kidneys. Her vet recomended Epakitin. After several months her cat has been holding it's own. I have now started my senior cats on this as a prophylaxis. My vet is not versed in holistics. He felt that by the time the cat is brought in it is too late. It makes me sad to think that I might have prolonged one old cat's life for her kidneys failed after two years of large water consumption. Also a Westie I had failed of kidney disease that it might have helped. Yes, these pets were under vet care and had blood work. (Posted on 11/16/11)

  8. Excellent Product review by Nevarte

I never would have thought that 1/2 spoon, twice a day of this powder could make a cat with chronic renal issues feel better. B. is now purring, running around, playing and enjoying life again as if she was a 5 year old! Truly amazing stuff (and best pricing on probioticsmart.com!) (Posted on 10/24/11)

  9. Excellent product review by Nevarte

This powder is pretty amazing. I'd never thought that half a spoon twice a day would make a cat with chronic renal issues feel better. B. is 14 years old and is playing, purring and enjoying life as if she was a 5 year old. Truly amazing stuff (and excellent pricing on probioticsmart!) (Posted on 10/24/11)

  10. Great Supplement review by Rhonda

Our dog was feeling so much better only a week after starting Epakitin. We also use Adodyl supplements and I think using them both if you can afford it will give you the best results. We also have him on the Hills k/d diet. This site has pretty good prices..glad we found it. (Posted on 6/6/11)

  11. Revived my English Bulldog review by Bulldoggirl

My vet recommended this for our 9 year old English bulldog. He has kideny failure and he was quite sick before we started him on Epakitin. We also use Azodyl supplements. He is like a new dog! In only a few weeks we have seen a dramatic improvement in the way he feels. Our vet just took another blood test and we are waiting on the results to see just how low his BUN and Creatine levels have gone down. I think the results should be promising.
I want to also mention our dog is also on the Hills k/d diet for dogs with rental failure. We are on a tight budget and these supplements can be pricey but Probioticsmart.com has very good prices...way better than our vet. Thanks Probioticsmart.com! (Posted on 6/6/11)

  13. Good Product review by Wendi

My dog has been on Epakitin for a year due to renal failure and is doing very well. He thinks he's a puupy again after being a grumpy old man for some time. (Posted on 3/21/11)

  14. 4 months and improvement review by john d

I have to order this stuff online, but it is definitely worth it. My dog, Oscar, was diagnosed with kidney failure, and it was definitely affecting him. I started him on this, and I have definitely seen a huge change in his ease of movement and appetite. I think he's definitely feeling better and seems happier. It's been 4 months now, and I think he's really improved. (Posted on 1/13/11)
