Why use natural moisturizers?

Is beauty skin deep? Skin is not just a delicate wrapper but a reflection of your overall health! If your skin is breaking out or peeling excessively, you may not want to rely on chemical-based cosmetics; natural moisturizers could be your answer!

Natural moisturizers offer an altogether comforting experience, because it does not have any chemicals or additives. When skin peels, nature heals!

There are primarily 5 skin types:

- Normal skin type is generally soft, healthy and supple without signs of oil or dryness.
- Dry skin type quickly dries out due to factors like weather, hormonal changes and
    excessive treatments.
- Oily skin type produces excessive sebum causing acne or sebaceous cysts.
- Combination types are usually dry around the eyes and cheeks, while forehead and
     nose areas appear oily.
- Sensitive skin type easily reacts to strong cosmetics and unfavorable environmental
conditions, causing poor skin health and premature aging.

All skin types need to be protected against age, weather conditions and excessive cosmetic use. Using natural products will help to keep your skin soft and youthful. All the skin types mentioned above (except the oily type) may benefit from the following natural moisturizers.

The oily skin type needs to use natural astringents to keep the skin firm and clear.

Natural Moisturizers

1. Coconut oil has great skin benefits. It is a good way to keep your skin soft and shiny. It effectively heals age spots, stretch marks, bruises and rashes. It may be used on your hair as well to moisturize the scalp and condition the hair.

2. Shea Butter: Shea butter derived from the African Shea nut is a natural moisturizer that helps heal fine lines, scars, stretch marks, sun burns and general skin irritations. Enriched with vitamin A and E, Shea butter treats skin damages well.

3. Cocoa butter extracted from cocoa beans is a natural emollient rich in vitamins A, C and E, which are antioxidants. It may be used on dry skin, chapped lips and stretch marks.

4. Traditionally, Aloe Vera gel has been used to heal burns, sunburns, wounds and certain skin conditions like psoriasis.

5. Lanolin is a therapeutic wax acquired from domestic wool-bearing sheep. The qualities in lanolin that protect the wool and skin of sheep also have a remarkable impact on the human skin. Lanolin-based products are very popular in personal care, baby skin care and treating sore nipples of nursing moms.

6. Cucumber is a good source of vitamins B & C and contains 95% water. It helps the body to rehydrate and detoxify, while topically it serves as a great moisturizer. The cucumber skin has anti-inflammatory properties and may be used to soothe skin irritations and sun burns. Putting a slice of cucumber on each of your tired eye would reduce puffiness and irritation.

Natural astringents

Natural astringents have anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that help to tighten the pores and reduce breakouts. Oily skin types may use the following natural astringents to treat the oiliness and improve the skin tone.

Rose water, witch hazel, orange blossom water, green tea, apple cider vinegar, calendula flowers and mint: Make a paste using one or more of these ingredients in rose water and apply a mask for 20 min. Wash your face and towel dry.

6 Tips for Tick Prevention

As summer approaches, it’s time to start considering tick prevention. The cold winter weather is disappearing, but the ticks are soon to make an appearance! It is especially important to be extra vigilant when spending time outdoors. Follow these tick prevention tips for a healthy summer:

1) Avoid heavily wooded or leafy areas. If possible, steer clear of these places as ticks are likely to accumulate in areas with high grass and a lot of leaf litter. Walk or bike in the center of trails. Keep a close eye on your children and/or pets if you decide to go hiking in the woods.

2) Use bug repellant, but not just any repellant. Make sure the product you use contains 20% or more DEET which will offer several hours of protection. It is important to only apply the repellant once a day and to avoid combining it with sunscreen. Follow the application instructions closely.

3) Pre-treat clothing. The best way to do this is by using permethrin on any garment you and your family will be wearing outside. After several washings, clothes will stay protected. Pre-treated clothing is sometimes available in sporting goods stores.

4) Check yourself often. This is essential if you have been in an area that is populated with ticks, such as wooded areas. Use a mirror to view all parts of your body. If you have children, examine them often as well.

5) Bathe or shower after being outdoors. You should do so within two hours of coming inside, which makes it easier to spot any ticks that may be crawling on your body.

6) Examine pets and gear. Check everything you took outside with you for hidden ticks. Pets and other items can carry ticks inside and end up transferring them to you. Ticks can also be dangerous to pets and lyme disease is just as real for them as for you, so make sure you check them thoroughly, especially under ears and tails. For tick prevention in pets, consider a tick repellant such as the Virbac Tick Collar.

Ticks bring disease with them, such as Lyme disease, so try your hardest to protect your family and pets from them. Tick bites are generally painless, so you may not know you’ve been bitten until the tick becomes engorged. Immediately remove engorged ticks from your body. Medical attention may be necessary under the following circumstances:

• If you think the tick has been on the skin for over 24 hours.
• Part of the tick remains in the skin after you have attempted to remove it.
• A rash of any kind develops, especially a red-ringed bulls eye rash, or red spots on the writs or ankles, as this is a symptom of Lyme disease.

Ticks are exceptionally common in many parts of the world, especially during the summer months. The best tick prevention is awareness and consistency when checking yourself, your family and your pets.

6 Common Pet Myths

As a pet owner, you have probably heard several claims from pet ads and other pet owners about what is good and bad for your pet. The truth is that every animal is different, and one thing might get your pet sick, but may not even affect your neighbor’s. There are several myths out there about whether or not certain things are okay for your pet. Don’t wonder any longer, because the most popular pet myths are debunked below!

1) Cats need milk. Despite all of the cute pictures we see of cats sipping up milk, resist the temptation to offer this in real life. In fact, most cats and dogs cannot break down lactose in milk product, which can lead to diarrhea, vomiting and other tummy problems. To keep your pets hydrated, offer them water and only water.

2) A warm nose means your dog is sick. Not necessarily. A dog’s nose can be warm for a number of reasons. Instead of determining that your pup is sick from that, look for other signs of sickness such as lethargy, loss of appetite, coughing, vomiting, and anything else that isn’t typical of him. Although a dog’s nose can be warm when he is sick or has a fever, but it should not be used to diagnose sickness.

3) Cats always land on their feet. This is actually not true, although every cat owner wishes it was! If you have a window, or other high area that your cat could fall from, keep it inaccessible from him. There are plenty of other ways you can stimulate his instincts, such as hiding kitty treats around the house of attaching a string to the wall that he can play with.

4) Kissing your dog is not harmful. Think about where your dog’s tongue has been, still want him to kiss you? It is actually possible for humans to contract salmonella poisoning and other infections from a dog’s mouth. But if you insist on being affectionate with your pet, keep his mouth as clean as possible by brushing his teeth, letting him chew bones, and bringing him in for regular veterinary check-ups to rule out dental problems.

5) Dogs eat grass because they like the way it tastes. This can be true, depending on your pet. Some animals do like to graze every once and a while. However, grass eating can pinpoint a stomach problem, such as gastritis or acid reflux disease. If you notice your pet chowing on grass regularly, you may want to take him to the vet for a check-up.

6) Flea collars are effective. This is not true, because the flea collar is only effective where the collar touches. Dogs with flea collars can still contract fleas. Instead of relying of these to prevent fleas, use products like Frontline that are proven to be effective.

Although these are not all of the pet myths that you hear from day to day, they are all very common, and trigger some of the most popular questions veterinarians get asked. Next time you hear a myth, get confirmation from a veterinarian to determine the reality behind it.

Senior Dog Incontinence – Causes and Treatments

Are you noticing dribble spots on the carpet or a soaked dog bed? As dogs age, they often lose their ability to completely control their bladders. Dog incontinence can often create a problem in households – but don’t worry; there are steps you can take to improve the problem.

Hormone deficiencies are essentially the cause of senior dog incontinence. When testosterone and estrogen in their bodies decreases, they lose their ability to control the urethral sphincter, a band of muscle located near the base of the bladder. Spayed or neutered dog are more likely to develop the condition because their reproductive organs have been removed, therefore they have fewer hormones. Older female dogs are more likely to be affected by incontinence because they have shorter, wider urethras.

Although urinary incontinence is usually harmless, there are some underlying problems that may be the cause of it, including:

• Cystitis
• Kidney stones
• Bladder stones
• Bladder tumor
• Bladder infection
• Urinary tract infection
• Liver disease

   • Kidney infection
   • Kidney failure
   • Diabetes
   • Cushing’s Disease
   • Steroids and other medications
   • Neurological disorders

Because there are so many possible causes for old dog incontinence, the condition requires veterinary attention. Your vet will need to do some investigation to determine any underlying cause. Initially, your dog will need a full physical exam, a urinalysis and a urine culture to determine if there is a urinary tract infection. Further tests (blood work and X-rays) may be necessary.

Treatment for dog incontinence depends on the cause. Your vet may prescribe medication and provide you with advice as to how to manage the incontinence. Supplements such as Pet Naturals Bladder Support for Dogs are recommended for senior dog bladder control management.

There are several steps you can take to make the incontinence more manageable. Keep your dog as clean and dry as possible to avoid skin irritation. Take your dog outside often to try and avoid accidents. Keep her well groomed, with her fur trimmed short. Make sure to provide her with plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Areas in the house where the dog has urinated should be cleaned with an enzymatic cleaner.

If you notice that you dog’s urinary habits have changed, it is advisable to bring him/her to the veterinarian right away to treat or cure the problem as soon as possible.

Natural Remedies for Insomnia

“Sleepless in Seattle” may be a great title for movies, but not the best for real life! What fun can it be to stay wide awake witnessing people around you, sleep peacefully to the lulling murmurs of a tedious night? A normal adult requires eight hours of sleep, but some of us hardly get even half of it. If you are one of those taking pills to aid sleep or simply having trouble sleeping in the nights or early mornings, then this piece concerns you. Read on for help, we're going to give you some natural remedies for insomnia.

Insomnia could be considered a mysterious output of a mechanical condition. If you see, the eastern philosophies perceive body as an extension of the mind and everything that affects the mind reflecting on the body (and vice versa in the western thought). When stressed out, your mind seeks an expression and often grabs work for that purpose. It quickly converts all the worries and anxieties in to physical work. But when there is no work in the nights and when the body is supposed to rest, the mind freezes like a default screen saver. This is generally true with workaholics, but there are other factors also causing insomnia.

Factors causing Insomnia:
Besides stress and anxieties, serious health conditions and aging are significant factors causing Insomnia. Mayo clinic.com confirms that many prescription drugs including anti-depressants and stimulants could interfere with sleep.

Lifestyles involving frequent travel; untimely eating habits; unhealthy diets involving greasy foods during late hours and watching late night television could be factors disturbing your sleep. Women going through menstrual cycles and menopause often find sleep cycles disturbed.

Natural remedies for Insomnia:
Mind requires cleansing just like the body. The negative issues blocking the mind should be gently washed away with the help of positive thoughts and experience. A sleepless tired mind could be lulled to sleep only when the senses are calmed.

Here are some natural remedies for Insomnia:

• Add 6 to 8 drops of Lavender, Frankincense or Chamomile essential oils to your bath in the evening to promote restful sleep, or add a few drops of the essential oil to a cloth and inhale deeply a few times.

• Gently massage your back, neck and shoulders using essential oils, making small circles stressing the thumbs to make gentle strokes.

• Decaffeinated herbal tea is a good way to calm the senses.

A few self-help tips to deal with Insomnia:

1. Meditate at least for 15 min. late evening, to teach your mind simply to exit the worldly issues and enter into a peaceful inner zone.

2. Wear loose fitted cotton clothes to bed. Also keep your bedroom dark, using dark colors for the walls and heavy curtains.

3. Keep your office work outside the bedroom, and that includes laptops, cell phones and other communication devices. Objects are connected to thought processes and even a slight beep could unconsciously trigger all the worries and stress waiting outside the door.

4. Television is like caffeine to the eyes, because it feeds your vision engaging the mind. Avoid television and on the other hand listen to soft music

5. Avoid caffeine after 5.00 pm. Early dinners and earlier workouts might help.

Essential oils have a great impact on the senses, creating a soothing experience lulling you to sleep. We hope these natural remedies for insominia will help you start falling asleep with ease.

DIY Beauty Tricks with Coconut Oil

It's hard to miss. Popping up on store shelves, in news stories and on vanities everywhere. Coconut oil, that is. And its sudden popularity is for good reason. Coconut oil is rich in skin-friendly saturated fats and antioxidants. It also helps strengthen underlying tissues and smooth the skin's surface. This all-natural, affordable and easy-to-find product just might be a perfect addition to your beauty routine.

Here are a few DIY beauty tricks with coconut oil. Remember, when using coconut oil for beauty purposes, it is best to buy quality. Look for food grade, unrefined oil. Give these tricks a try and let us know what you think.

Moisturizer

Keep dry skin at bay. Try applying coconut oil to your face and body right after you step out of the shower. Scoop a little directly into your hands, rub in between your palms to soften and smooth over your skin. The oil absorbs quickly and won't clog your pores. Or try replacing your shaving cream with coconut oil. This is a perfect solution for those with sensitive skin. Just smooth the oil over your skin and shave as usual. Rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel.

Body scrub

All you need is two ingredients for this DIY body scrub. Three if you're feeling fancy. Mix two parts coconut oil to one part sugar. Warm the oil in the microwave first to make mixing easier. Don't forget to add a few drops of essential oil if you'd like a specific fragrance. Just rub it all over your skin and rinse off. It's really that easy.

Makeup remover

Do your face a favor and ditch the harsh chemicals. Rub a little coconut oil between your fingers to soften, then apply to your face in a circular motion. The coconut oil will break down waxy makeups and leave your skin moisturized. To help remove stubborn mascara, put a couple drops of oil on a cotton ball and gently sweep it over closed eyes. Then, wash your face as usual. Coconut oils works well as a makeup brush cleaner, too. Just soak the brushes in melted coconut oil, rinse thoroughly and let air dry.

Hair treatment

Coconut oil works well as a leave-in hair conditioner. Work a teaspoon of oil in your hands, then run your fingers through your hair. Make sure to pay special attention to any damaged ends. Wrap your hair in a warm towel and leave it on for a few hours, or overnight for an even deeper treatment. When it comes time to rinse your hair out, shampoo a few times to remove any excess oil. You'll be left with soft, shiny hair.

April PSCPets Rescue Outreach Program

Our featured organization for the month of April is the Greater Ohio Boxer Rescue. This non-profit organization has been a dedicated customer of PSCPets.com products for their rescued Boxers. Because of their loyal business with us and their dedication to helping Boxers in need, we are offering them a chance to earn free products!

For every $3 you donate to PSCPets.com, we will be able to donate an order of PSCPets brand Intelliflora, which retails at $14.99. We cover the rest of the product cost! Learn more about how to donate here: April Rescue Outreach.

About GO Boxer Rescue
GO Boxer Rescue is a non-profit Foster Home-based organization that serves Ohio and bordering areas. This organization acts as a placement program to foster Boxers in need and eventually find them forever homes.

Currently, GOBR has 12 Boxers being evaluated in foster homes and being conditioned for adoption.

Co-founders Delmar Robinson and Rachel Osborn met in 1995. Both had a history with raising Boxers and a soft spot in their hearts for the breed, so they dedicated their time to helping Boxers who needed new homes.

Go Boxer Rescue’s mission since then has been to find forever homes for Boxers. The rescue assesses the health and temperament of each dog, and provides medical care and training as needed.

This rescue is also dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership through their application process and pet ownership preparation. They are committed to helping owners with any issues they may be experiencing in order to ensure a safe and happy existence for both Boxer and family.

How can I help?
GOBR needs your help! On top of operating expenses, this outreach takes on full medical expenses for dogs that are found needing medical care. They deal with a variety of issues such as broken legs, Ricketts disease, mange, surgeries and much more.

These procedures are expensive and paid for by GOBR, so funding and donations are a huge need for this outreach.

“All of these things, along with the routine spay/neuter and immunizations and testing for heartworms and fecal parasites, costs money to treat and care for,” says Director Osborn.

Please consider donating $3 to this cause, volunteering for fostering, or supplying GOBR with necessities such as dog beds, crates, blankets, gift cards and sturdy toys. GOBR accepts quality food and treats, dog bowls, preferably stainless steel or other non-porous materials.

“Basically we accept anything that can be used to care for Boxers,” says Osborn. “We also accept other items that can be used to auction, or raffle or sell at events such as our annual Boxer Bash to help us raise funds, as well as spread the word to the public.”

All About Boxers
Boxers come in two breeds: German Boxer and American Boxer. These breeds vary slightly in body structure.

Boxers were named as such because they love to use their front paws for just about everything, presenting the appearance of a boxer. They are very clownish and playful.

Appearance
The Boxer’s has a compact, powerful body, a distinctive short muzzle and an under bite. The ears are set high on their head and either cropped or kept natural, while the tail is often docked. This breed’s short coat comes in brindle and fawn, with a wide variety of colors including golden, red, mahogany, deer, white or dark. This breed typically weighs between 50 and 70 pounds and grows up to 25 inches tall.

Personalities
The Boxer is an athletic and muscular breed that requires a lot of exercise and daily walks otherwise it can become high strung and mischievous. In the right conditions they are happy, high-spirited, playful, intelligent and affectionate.

A “Working” breed, this dog trains well and if socialized properly will get along with other dogs and even cats!

Myths About White Boxers
Technically, white Boxers are either Brindle or Fawn, not truly white, and they are not rare as portrayed in newspaper ads.

“Approximately 23 percent of all Boxers are born ‘white,’ some having a patch over an eye or ear, or other places on their body,” says Rachel Osborn. “Some think that all white Boxers are deaf, but this is not the case either.” Luckily, only 10 to 12 percent of white Boxers are born deaf.

“We also hear stories/myths about this color or that color being mean. That is NOT true at all,” Osborn iterates.

“Color has no bearing on temperament. Breeding and training and care determine the personality of each individual Boxer.”

This month’s outreach donation is for IntelliFlora, a natural probiotic formula for dogs and cats. Learn more about IntelliFlora here
.

Natural Remedies for Acne

What can be frustrating to a teenager, more than even constant naggings from parents and overwhelming school routines? There is only one thing, a size of a pinhead that is completely capable of crumbling the delicate balance of a teenager’s vibrant world. Yes, of course it is acne! Read on to learn more about natural remedies for acne!

Acne, commonly known as pimples or zits, is a condition that occurs when the skin pores get clogged for some reason. The term Acne includes white heads, black heads, red bumps called papules and pustules. Even though teenagers universally suffer from acne, many adults suffer from this problem as well.

Why does acne occur?

Skin has innumerable pores, and each pore opens to a hair follicle and an oil gland. Oils secreted by these glands keep the skin soft and supple. But if the glands produce too much oil, there is a chance of pores getting clogged by bacteria, build up dirt and dead cells. As a result acne occurs, causing pain, infection and swelling. There could be other factors also triggering acne, such as hormonal changes or using hormonal supplements; following intense exercise routines involving high levels of perspiration or diets involving too much of refined sugar.

Natural Remedies for Acne:

Prescribed medication for acne is an option, but there are some natural remedies you could try at home, such as the following:

1. Ayurveda suggests chick pea powder to cleanse and clear the pores, and then applying a facial mask with a blend of almond powder and goat’s milk.
2. Putting a dab of sandalwood - turmeric cream* on acne is another effective remedy. However, it is advisable to use this cream in the nights before you go to bed as turmeric leaves a mild tinge of yellow on the skin.
3. Drinking a blend of cumin, coriander, fennel seeds* (under half a spoon each) in tea could be helpful. (*Available in Indian grocery stores)
4. Aroma therapy suggests tea tree and lavender essential oils. Read more about the benefits of aromatherapy and Essential Oils for Acne.
5. Naturopathy suggests drinking a blend of beet and carrot juices with water in a proportion of 1:3:2 as a natural cleanser to clear the complexion from inside out.

A few self-help tips when you have acne:

• Clean your face gently using mild non-drying soaps.
• Do not use oil based cosmetics as it may increase the breakouts.
• Wash your face every day at least twice, especially after work outs and sports.
• Avoid wearing hats and tight headbands, because it might trap the sweat and oils in your hair, causing skin breakouts and irritations.
• Shampoo your hair frequently if it is oily, and be sure to keep such hair off your face to avoid contact.
• Never pick on the pimples, as it could get infected.
• Consult your pharmacist before trying any over the counter treatments.
• Too much of sun exposure may be harmful, increasing the risks of skin cancer.

Acne is a natural condition calling for natural remedies. Unlike some cosmetics, natural remedies do not leave scars or side effects. You can get started today with our natural remedy for acne kit!

Improve Your Pet’s Quality of Life with a Detox

It’s springtime, which is the best time of year for a detoxifying cleanse. Why? Because it’s warmer outside, your body can use less work to keep itself at a safe temperature. You don’t want to stress your body out unnecessarily during a detox because your system is more vulnerable.

This is also an ideal time of year because we have spent most of the winter building up toxins from forced hibernation.

Cleansing has been known to provide several benefits by ridding the body of built up toxins. People have been doing it for a very long time through fasting, diet and supplemental usage. Now we are finding out that our pets also need help in ridding the toxins we put upon them just by bringing them into our homes.

Most pet health symptoms, illness and diseases are caused by an accumulation of toxins that our pets are not able to eliminate. Chronic illnesses that didn’t exist 40 years ago are now very common in household pets due to poor immune systems.

Poor nutrition, over-vaccinating and exposure to environmental toxins around the home are all large factors contributing to poor immunity and health.

Common symptoms of toxicity in pets

Skin Problems: Skin rashes, Eczema, Psoriasis, Tumors, Cysts, Infected Wounds, Acne and other non-allergy skin problems i.e., Mange (see Calendula Extract, Mega Omega-3 and Rejuva Spray)
Dog and cat Constipation and Diarrhea
Kidney and Liver problems
Cancers
Intestinal parasites, Urinary tract infections (see Yeast & Fungal D’Tox)
Cat fur ball problems
Dog valley fever
Bad Breath
Stinky Coat
Itchy Feet/Tail
                    ….and the list goes on!

Much of these symptoms can be avoided or reduced naturally by cleansing your pet from the inside out and providing a high quality diet.

If the diet has been less than high quality, it is most likely that the cells, organs and body systems are not able to function as efficiently as possible. Over time toxins accumulate in the body breaking it down from the inside out.

Where do Toxins come from?
A few common sources of toxins:

• Air Qaulity - Contaminents and toxins from cleaning supplies, air fresheners, and other household items used for cleaning gather in air and severely damage the health of in-home atmosphere.
• Tap water
• Plastics - water dishes, chew toys.
• Fertilizers and pesticides - Pets walk on the lawn and then lick their paws.
• Commercial pet food i.e. fillers, chemical preservatives as in Ethoxyquin, BHA and BHT, Propylene Glycol, Nitrates, Heavy Metals leaching from canned food.
• Vaccinations, Pharmaceuticals, Drugs and Antibiotics - flea collars or drops are highly toxic.
• Fire retardants and antimicrobials - from pets bedding, accessories.
• Grooming Products - chemicals are absorbed through the skin or licked off by the animal.
• Teflon chemicals - toxic fumes are released into the air when cooking with non-stick pans. These fumes will kill birds.

About detoxifying your pet
Shawn Messonnier, DVM at DogChannel.com, gives great advice on detoxing your pet:

Using gentle herbal and homeopathic remedies and nutritional supplements help cleanse the dog’s body and allow greater healing to occur. The following tips can help you with your pet’s detoxification:

1. A brief fast lasting 12 to 24 hours can benefit most pets. Plenty of fresh, clean, filtered water should be available to your pet during this time.

2. Symptoms get worse before they get better. Everything has to come out and as your pet’s body rids itself of toxins it will experience these toxins more than normal. Do not discontinue the detox at this point unless you feel your pet’s life is in danger.

3. Do not bathe your pet during a detox. Brushing, however, is just fine!

4. Upgrade Food & Treats. Switching to a more natural food can benefit your dog’s long-term health. Feeding a high-quality, natural diet is one of the simplest steps you can take to minimize toxins accumulating in your dog’s body.

5. Providing supplements can help heal a dog’s damaged gastrointestinal system. Because a damaged gastrointestinal system can lead to further absorption of toxins, this is an important step for most dogs undergoing a detoxification program. The liver is one of the main organs of detoxification – a damaged liver allows toxins to accumulate in the dog’s body.

Let’s face it: raising a pet can get messy sometimes. Who actually enjoys cleaning up that smelly “accident” found on the living room floor?

As gross as poop duty is, it’s a necessary evilsometimes; however, a well-trained pet shouldn’t be having many unexpected “accidents” without cause.

If you’ve been experiencing these stinky surprises, or noticed a change in the health of your pet’s bowel movements such as diarrhea, be sure that it’s not normal. There is something affecting your pet’s digestive track (also known as a gastrointestinal imbalance) and it shouldn’t be ignored.

Bacterial Imbalance
Like humans, animals carry healthy bacteria in their systems which help with immunity, digestion and other bodily functions.

“The quality of the intestinal bacteria is determined for the most part by the presence of multiple stable groups of bacteria, the total quantity of each type of bacteria and their proportions in relation to one another.” - Gerrit de Weerd, Farm Food Dog Food

In short, a healthy intestinal track requires a healthy ratio of “good” bacteria, and a severe and consistent lack of these good bacteria is known to physicians as dysbacteriosis.

What causes bacterial imbalance in my pet’s GI tract?
When the balance of intestinal bacteria becomes disrupted, problems such as chronic diarrhea often occur. Conditions such as Dysbacteriosis are caused mostly due to the use of antibiotics, which kills off any foreign bodies living within your pet – even the good ones!

“Antibiotics alter the normal flora that serves as a protective barrier against pathogens. When these normal, beneficial organisms are killed off, harmful bacteria are free to multiply and cause disease. The best example is severe diarrhea that follows the use of certain antibiotics, which change the normal flora of the bowel.” – pets.webmd.com

So what’s a recommended treatment for the side effects caused by the use of antibiotics?
Reintroduction of beneficial flora!

The good news is these little problems can be cared for in your own home without the expensive assistance of a veterinarian. Even better news: ProbioticSmart.com has an affordable solution!

IntelliFloraTM – Created and Approved by Veterinarians!

This is one of our most popular products. IntelliFloraTM is created in-house by our veterinarians for the intestinal health of your dog or cat. It comes in an enticing powder form, which you sprinkle on your pet’s food daily.

This wonderful product contains dehydrated living cultures of five different bacteria, which “come back to life” once they are warmed up in your pet’s intestinal tract.

According to our clinical research study, this probiotic is “designed to increase total lactic acid bacteria such as Enterococcus faecium and species of Lactobacillus in the gastrointestinal tract (GI) of dogs and cats.”
The graph below shows the efficacy and colonization of these bacteria in a dog’s GI tract. Examination of the fecal matter showed that the specific bacteria provided by Intellaflora increased greatly in numbers.

IntelliFlora was given daily to dogs as indicated in the directions. Fecal matter was collected after 3 days and analyzed for Enterococcus faecium by a specific microbiological plating method. IntelliFlora use shows dramatic increases of Enterococcus faecium in the fecal matter of dogs. These results are consistent with IntelliFlora for helping dogs that need to obtain a healthy GI tract and lifestyle.

Also present in this product is a variety of essential vitamins and nutrients including Vitamins A, C, E, Zinc and Manganese. These supplements are important to your dog or cat’s proper metabolism, vision and immune system function.

Ask an expert…
We asked our resident veterinarian, Dr. Vijay Sasi, DVM, MS, some typical questions our customers have about using this product. Please read below for his input and advice.

How do I know when my pet needs probiotics?
Most common reason to give probiotics is poor appetite, digestive upsets etc. related to stress, post antibiotic therapy etc. All these things are, in general, due to microbial imbalance in the gut. If the problem does not resolve with microbial supplements, talk to your vet for further investigation.

Should I treat my pet with IntelliFlora in conjunction with another product?
IntelliFlora is a microbial supplement and in general can be a stand-alone product. For specific conditions when the dog needs specialty food like low protein, low fat, low minerals etc. due to kidney/liver disorder etc. , it is a good idea to consult your vet for advice.

What can I expect when I give my pet this product?
• Improved appetite and digestion.
• Better attitude and energy
• Better stool consistency
• Over all improved health specifically following stressful situations

How long does it take to see results?
This depends on the condition. I have seen results as early as 12 hours. Sometimes it take about 5-7 days.

How long should I keep my pet on IntelliFlora? Is overdose possible?
It is a very safe product. If given in extremely large amounts, mild diarrhea is possible.

Can IntelliFlora spoil/go bad?
These are viable bacteria and they have a shelf life of 2 years when stored as directed. High temperature, moisture, etc., will destroy the bacteria and product will lose efficacy. Always replace the lid after use and store in a cool, dry place.

What are the causes of poor digestion in pets?
• Stress
• Enzymes Deficiency
• Low quality food
• Microbial imbalance

Special Instructions:
• If your dog becomes very ill and develops a fever, don’t waste any time getting him to a vet.
• Administering special intestinal bacteria preparations designed for humans will not benefit your dog. The pH balance (acidity) of a dog’s stomach is so low that virtually none of its intestinal bacteria will survive (unless they are acid-resistant types such as the tripe bacteria and the bacterial spores of ruminants).
• All dry feed is sterile (contains no bacteria). Also canned feed and other products that don’t require freezing are sterile and therefore do not benefit the accumulation and maintenance of intestinal bacteria.

About Sheltie Rescue of Utah

The mission of Sheltie Rescue of Utah is to rescue lost and discarded Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties), rehabilitate them physically and mentally, and to find new homes in which they will flourish for the rest of their lives. SRU is a 501( c ) ( 3 ) Charitable Organization which does not participate in euthanasia.

What sets SRU apart is the fact that it does not operate as a shelter, but as an adoptive foster service to temporarily house and evaluate the shelties brought in. These pooches live with people as opposed to in kennels, and are cared for by individuals briefly until forever homes are found for them!

The utmost care: SRU diligently searches for the right adoptive families, and utilize foster homes to evaluate the physical and behavioral characteristics of their shelties. Rescued dogs are house trained and rehabilitated. All medical problems are addressed while the shelties are cared for in their foster homes. Currently there are 11 dogs being cared for at this organization that are ready for adoption. You can browse these Shelties and learn about their stories here.

Follow SRU on Facebook or Twitter!

Interested in adopting a puppy? SRU says DO NOT BUY from pet stores! “While there may be pet shops that sell dogs and cats that are healthy and come from reputable sources, we haven’t found them,” states our friends at SRU.

Puppy mills are unethical and only exist for the purpose of manufacturing puppies as money-making products. The puppies you see in pet stores are bought from puppy farms. They often have questionable parentage and are born in inhumane and unsanitary conditions. These poor animals are shipped through horrendous means, stuffed into large boxes and often arriving sick or damaged.

Unfair puppy mill prices.
A poor condition of the puppies upon arrival can cause a markup in the selling price in order to offset the cost of making the puppies look presentable and adoptable. In short, the puppies you see in pet shops have probably led unhealthy existences and are more expensive than they should be, all for the sake of profit.
Many shelters and animal activists urge consumers not to support pet stores dealing in dogs and cats.

Consider adopting an adult dog.
Though most of the Shelties found at shelters like SRU are no longer puppies, you can be assured that they have been well cared for and prepared to come home with you. In fact, all dogs are spayed or neutered at SRU, not to mention the fact that most adult dogs are housebroken and probably more trained than a new puppy would be. Imagine skipping all the messes and chewed up furniture!

Fair and ethical.
Adoption fees are fairly priced and go towards the operation of the non-profit organization to ensure a healthy environment for the rescued dogs. Visit the SRU web site to browse shelties in need of homes, learn more about their adoption fees (which helps to cover costs of living for your dog, sometimes amounting in thousands of dollars!) and fill out a 3-part adoption application under “Online Forms.”

SRU also supports your decision to find your next family member from your local Humane Society and save a life from euthanasia!

On the other hand, too much vitamin D is no good either. Hypervitaminosis D is the name for the toxicity that occurs when there is an excess of vitamin D. This leads to hypercalcemia, a condition that occurs with high levels of calcium in your blood. As a result you may experience low appetite, nausea and urinary problems.

Foods enriched with vitamin D:

Children and healthy diets seldom go hand in hand. Kids do love their junk food over dairy and vegetables, and we do allow it to some extent. But how to make sure, they get their daily share foods with vitamin D, especially during those sunless winter months? Besides scheduled soccer practice and bike rides in the bright sun, sneak in to your child’s diet- fish, dairy, eggs and mushrooms to give their fair share of vitamin D foods. What do we do with the fussy ones with that uncanny gift of smell, shrinking away at every fresh recipe? Vitamin D supplements should solve your problem! One dose of supplement should take care of the required vitamin D intake.

Vitamin D benefits are many and necessary to a healthy body… let’s not forget:

1. Children and outdoors are like ocean sand and long walks - made for each other! Take time to make sure your children play outdoors, in a safe place supervised by a responsible adult.
2. Provide Vitamin D rich foods such as dairy, fish, eggs and mushrooms! Hide it in pasta, sandwiches or soups for the fussy ones.
3. Vitamin D supplements, one a day will make sure you and your kids have strong bones, good appetite and in-built resistance.
4. D for Dynamic!

House With a Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary

PSCPets.com seeks to assist non-profit organizations that care and advocate for animals by providing them with certain products they can utilize with the help of a minimal donation from you! Each month we feature a new non-profit organization to promote and support with the PSCPets Rescue Outreach Program.

PSCPets’ February Rescue Outreach Program featured organization is House With A Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

For every $3 donation we receive during the month of February, PSCPets.com will send one bottle of PSCPets Joint Support, which retails at $14.99, to House Wtih a Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary. This product, which comes in soft chew form, is ideal for the old critters at HWAH. Please make your donations here!

About HWAH

House With A Heart is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization which provides shelter for senior dogs and cats. This organization does its part to reduce the amount of older dogs and cats that are euthanized or made homeless because of their aging conditions. Unlike most shelters, HWAH does not seek to find new homes for their animals but instead provides a place for them to live out the remainder of their lives.

HWAH greatly appreciates any donations, as caring for older pets can be more costly than with younger animals since they require special diets and more frequent medical attention.

More info about PSCPets Joint Support

Developed and created by our own veterinarian team, this product contains a special blend of ingredients that help to support healthy bones, joints and surrounding tissues. These ingredients include glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, manganese, and Vitamin E.

How do these ingredients help with joint health?

• Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate: Thought to help slow or prevent the degeneration of joint cartilage, the underlying cause of osteoarthritis pain. (Yes, your pet can suffer from arthritis, too!) Glucosamine has been shown in laboratory tests to help protect joint cartilage by limiting breakdown and helping to build up levels of cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate is part of a protein molecule that gives cartilage its elastic properties and is thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect. This can help relieve painful swelling in your pat caused by exposed joint bones rubbing together. (Thomas E. Hyde, DC.)

• Manganese: This supplement can be beneficial for several conditions, including Osteoporosis and arthritis. Those suffering from arthritis tend to be lacking in SOD, an antioxidant that helps protect the joints from damage during inflammation. Some experts theorize that manganese may increase SOD levels, and a few clinical studies of people with rheumatoid and osteoarthritis suggest that manganese taken along with glucosamine and chondroitin can reduce pain (UMMC).

• Vitamin E: Also known as D-Alpha Tocopherol Succinate, Vitamin E is an antioxidant and a nutrient that may protect cells against the damage caused by free radicals. Studies show that the buildup of these free radicals is responsible for the aging process and may lead to arthritis, heart disease, and cancer. The powerful antioxidant properties may help prevent damage to joint tissue. (learninginfo.org).

The residents at House With a Heart Senior Pet Sancutary would really appreicate your help! If you have $3 to spare, please consider donating it to help with the ailing joints of the seniors at HWAH!

Iron Deficiency – Symptoms, Testing and Increasing Iron Levels

Iron is important!

Iron is an important mineral that is used by the body in the making of red blood cells, more specifically; iron is used in the making of hemoglobin which is the most prominent protein in red blood cells. Hemoglobin transports oxygen throughout the body, so in the absence of iron, tissues, muscles and other systems of the body do not receive the right amount of oxygen and therefore cannot perform as they should. The right amounts of iron in the body will eliminate fatigue and muscle weakness as well as promote a healthy immune system.

What happens when iron is lacking in the body?

Unfortunately iron deficiency is the number one nutritional deficiency in the world! Remember how we said iron is needed to successfully produce hemoglobin, the red blood cell that transports oxygen all over the body? Well if you don't have enough iron your body needs to work a whole heck of a lot harder to get the energy it so desperately needs to function properly. This lack of iron, which leads to lack of oxygen, leaves people feeling tired, weak, irritable and unable to focus. Being that iron deficiency is so wide spread, this might give you some insight into why some of your friends and family members exhibit some of those symptoms. Hey consider this… Aunt Betty might not actually be a crabby, tired, unfocused woman; she could have an iron deficiency!

It's also important to note that women with heavy periods are also at a higher risk for an iron deficiency. There's a little something called the tampon test, if you find that you're changing tampons more than every two hours, chances are you are losing too much iron and should have your iron levels checked.

Iron deficiency and fatigue

With the fast paced life most people lead it's pretty normal to feel tired, however take a look at these warning signs of iron deficiency and check off the ones you feel pertain to you:

1. You are really fatigued for over a month.

2. You always feel cold.

3. Your skin looks paler than usual.

4. You can't focus at all.

5. You have substantial hair loss and brittle nails.

If you checked off one or more of the above symptoms, your overall fatigue level could be caused by an iron deficiency and you should head in to your doctor for a check.

Getting tested for an iron deficiency:

You might not know it, but when you go through your annual medical exam your doctor is most likely not looking for an iron deficiency. Normal blood work includes checks for blood pressure and cholesterol numbers, but not for iron unless you ask for it specifically. If you exhibit any of the symptoms stated before, ask for an iron test the next time you visit your doctor.

Increasing your intake of iron rich foods:

If you'd like to start increasing the levels of iron in your system right now you can up your intake of iron rich foods, or start on an iron supplement. Here is a list of iron rich foods you can start adding to your diet today:

Red meat

Egg yolks

Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards)

Dried fruit (prunes, raisins)

Iron-enriched cereals and grains (check the labels)

Mollusks (oysters, clams, scallops)

Turkey or chicken giblets

Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans

Liver

Artichokes

Considering an iron supplement:

If you feel you could have an iron deficiency, there is also the option of an iron supplements such as Feosol which is designed to help increase the body's absorption of iron. In case, you find that you are allergic to it or feel that it is burning your skin then apply more carrier oil to that area to reduce the effect of the essential oil. However, if you don't find any side effect then that oil mix is safe for use.

Diluting essential oils: Essential oils are highly concentrated and most of the time require a carrier oil when being applied directly to the skin. A carrier oil isn’t needed for applications that are inhaled, such as when adding a few drops of lavender to a cloth and inhaling deeply to encourage relaxation.
