How can I get my puppy to eat?
I just got a new pug puppie. I named him Cleo, and he was rescued from a puppy mill. I've had dogs before, but never who were traumatized like he probably was. I've only had him for a couple of days, and I can't get him to eat anything. I don't know what kind of food he was on before. I've just been trying to get him to eat the puppy food he came with because I don't want to start him on people food, but I'm getting pretty worried. Any suggestions?

I would go with healthy people food, like hamburger or chicken. Just don't feed him junk. Also, I've heard before that a dog will not starve itself to death, so even though it's hard, maybe try not to worry too much. It might be a good idea to call the vet though. You never know what kind of disease he may have picked up in the mill.

Have you tried wetting his food with warm water? The warmth can release some of the smells from the food and make it more appetizing. Or maybe try adding canned food.

I wouldn't worry about spoiling him. I mean, ask your vet, but he did come from a puppy mill. I think he deserves some people food, personally.

Is he undernourished? You could give him some high-calorie milk replacer. It's mostly for puppies, but you can also feed it dogs who are in need of a lot of nutritional help.

He was underweight. The vet recommended Esbilac, so I started him on that, and he's doing better. Eating more and going to the bathroom regularly.
That's good to hear. Just so you know, it might be cheaper on this site because everything is marked up so much at the vet. Here's a link: http://pscpets.probioticsmart.com/esbilac-powdered-milk-replacer-for-puppies-and-dogs.html. Good luck!
Thanks, everyone!

You could also try some raw food, like chicken or beef. Just make sure to add some probiotics to help with digestion. You can even use yogurt.

My dogs love yogurt. It's also helpful if you add any supplements to their food because it sticks.

Try Just a Wee Bit. My pugs love it, and they're really picky. It's made with bison, and the kibble is tiny, which is perfect for a pug.
