What is a good supplement for cat arthritis?
My vet said that my cat Lucy is in the beginning stages of arthtitis. I'm wondering whar kinds of supplements I could start her on.

My 17 year old cat is currently on Dasaquin feline which is a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement with ASU (omega supplement) which I feel is the top of the line for her joints. You can also find other glucosamine/chondroitin supplements with other additives for joint health like zebra mussel or MSM.  I also like Dasaquin because it’s a powder on her food not a hard treat (she has no teeth).

You could also give an Omega-3 & 6 supplement which has all kinds of benefits to the skin, heart and joints.

Adequan is a great medication which can be thought of as a mega glucosamine/chondroitin supplement.  It's an injection (super easy to learn to do at home once taught) and it also has anti-inflammatory affects on the bladder for cats with urinary issues.  A vet has to prescribe it but it can be a miracle worker for cats with advanced OA.

Lastly, you might consider it "supplemental" but "cold" laser therapy (like companion laser therapy brand) is a WONDERFUL treatment for arthritis. I worked as a vet tech in a hospital that used these lasers and I saw amazing improvement in cats that completed the series.  Cats that couldn’t jump onto the couch were now jumping up to the windowsill.  My cat was treated for her hips and lower spine and she loved it.  The area gets warm to the touch and she would just sit there and purr through the whole thing.  I highly recommend looking into all these treatments and trying to incorporate as many as possible for Lucy's current and future comfort.

As always, speak with your vet when it comes to any supplement or physical treatments for guidance.

Hi Anna,

Is Lucy an older cat? Joint pain and arthritis is quite a comment ailment for older animlas. An anti-inflammatory supplement would be a good thing to get started with; your vet will probably recommend something like Duralactin.
