Any way to keep a male cat from spraying?
Our cat just started spraying in our house. He just started it all of a sudden, but it can't go on any longer. Is there any way to get him to stop? Does anything work to take out the smell? It's really bad.

If he's not neutered, it's probably because of that, but if he already is, it might be something like a bladder infection. You might need to take him to the vet and have him tested.

I took in a stray once that I thought was a girl. It started spraying and I realized that it was a boy, so we took him in and had him nuetered. That took care of it. As far as cleaning goes, get one of those enzyme cleaners from Walmart or wherever. They work the best.

You should get it done soon if you haven't already, before it becomes normal behavior. If you wait too long, it might be too late.
The stuff with the pink lable at Walmart works good.

Make sure that there is no smell  left, or he will keep coming back to the same place. Is he the only cat?

Sometimes if there is more than one cat, they will be territorial and need seperate litter boxes.

Here's a great link on "inappropriate elimination":

http://catinfo.org/?link=litterbox

and here is the list of

Top reasons for a cat to stop using the litter box:

  • Dirty litter box(es)

  • Poor choice of litter form (using pellets/crystals/non-clumping litter which are uncomfortable to walk on and do not allow for complete urine removal)

  • Poor location of litter box(es)

  • Blocked from the box by a dominant feline housemate

  • Unable to relax and get to the box, or use it, due to fear of a strange human, dog, active child, loud noise, etc., in the house environment

  • Box size is too small

  • Too few boxes

  • Medical problem(s) - This should always be a serious consideration.

I took in a stray once, and I wan't sure how old he was. He started spraying so we took him to get neutered. He went on a white dress shirt of mine in a dirty clothes pile, and I used Nature's Miracle spray that's just for cats, and it actually came out.

That sucks. I had to have a cat move outside once because she wouldn't quit. She was fine though, and just as happy in the barn.
